Canada Day & Memorial Day

Posted on July 1, 2013 Posted in 2013, Canada Day, Holidays, Memorial Day, NL .
Happy Canada Day!

And for my fellow Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, I wish you a thoughtful Memorial Day as we remember the Battle of the Somme at Beaumont-Hamel where we pretty much lost an entire generation of young men.

I've written about Memorial Day twice. In 2008 and again in 2011. It was an important day in our history – When the Dominion of Newfoundland fought along side Canada for the British Empire during the First World War. Lest we forget.

So this morning I'll be thinking of those who fell for us so many years ago, but this afternoon and evening is for celebrating the great country that we have today.

Have a great day!

#ThrowbackThursday – This Little Guiding Light of Mine

Posted on June 27, 2013 Posted in 2013, Friends, Girl Guides, Meme, NL, Nostalgic, Throwback Thursday .
VM Brownie

Me as a Brownie circa 1988.

I’ve been involved with Girl Guides of Canada almost consistently since I was seven years old when I became a Brownie (this was before Sparks even existed!).

I did have a few years where I wasn’t involved with the Guiding movement while I was living in Toronto, but once I returned to Newfoundland and Labrador, I joined up with the Brownie unit I volunteered with for years before moving away.

There have been lots of raining camping trips, tinfoil dinners, and so many campfire songs that have enriched my childhood and adulthood thanks to Girl Guides.

I can even brag that I met one of my best friends thanks to Pathfinders! I still remember our first meeting of the 34th St. John’s Pathfinders. There was a larger than normal number of first year girls because a bunch of us from another area in the city had heard that this unit was really good, so we decided to join it. There was a girl there named Stacey and I figured she must have been a second year girl because she already had a bunch of badges (when in fact Stacey had attended the Pathfinder’s camp that summer and earned those badges as a brand new member).

VM and Stacey Pathfinders of the Year

Stacey and I with the Pathfinder(s) of the Year award, circa 1996. It was the first time ever that two people received it… which seems rather fitting for us. Also in the photo is Joan Osmond who was one of our leaders in both Pathfinders and Rangers (and she went to England and Switzerland with us), and Marg Breen our Provincial Commissioner at the time.

Stacey and I went to the same junior high school and it was through our Pathfinder meetings and also recognizing each other at school that we became fast friends. And around that same time a girl named Darleen, who was in Stacey homeroom, was also on the scene and the three of started a friendship that still holds true today.

There are a lot of great memories I share through Guiding adventures with Stacey; and lots of inside jokes. From the Allen blanket, to lying in the middle of the road in Adelboden, Switzerland, to using a map with a hole in it while trying get to a showing of Rent! in London, England… we’ve had a lot of good times.

Over the years I’ve made a lot of great friends thanks to Girl Guides and I also hope that I’ve helped mentor and be a role model for the girls that have come up through our Brownie unit. Our meetings are on Monday nights and no matter how tired I may be after work that day, I always feel energized and hapy after a Brownie meeting.

VM, Stacey and Missy Moo

Missy Moo, Stacey and I at the Guiding banquet last week.

Last week was the end of year banquet for our Brownie unit and also the Girl Guide unit that our group normally move on to once they finish their second year. The leader of both units are good friends (including some daughters and mothers who are leaders! It really is a family thing for us). So f course I had to bring Missy Moo. She was wearing a onsie that said Future Guide on it, which we have on loan from Stacey (her little one was wearing it until she grew out of it, not it’s my little one’s turn).

I do hope Missy Moo will want to be in Girl Guides. I won’t force her to join, but I hope she’ll see how much fun it is and how it can be such a great way to make friendships that can last a lifetime.

Run Forrest! Run!

Posted on August 27, 2012 Posted in 2012, Bobble-head Ted, NL, St. John's, Tumblr, Uncategorized .

On Sunday, July 22, I did something I’ve wanted to do for years. I ran the Tely 10!

Now for a lot of people, hoofing it across 10 miles / 16 kilometers probably isn’t all that big a deal. Heck, when I lived in Toronto I often walked to and from work and covered around nine kilometers a day.

Pre Tely 10

All ready to tackle those 10 miles.

But the Tely is different.
It’s a run that all of St. John’s and surrounding communities are aware of and make note. There are running clinics that can prepare you for the big day. It’s a rite of passage for a lot of runners.

On race day, there are thousands of runners who are local participants; sometimes they’re your neighbours or co-workers. And you don’t have to look far to find people from outside of the province who are in town for the race.

Last year I wanted to do the Tely, but sloppy training left me with an angry knee and I wussed out.

This year I was determined, but probably didn’t train as much as I should have…

*Insert witty Valentine’s commentary*

Posted on February 14, 2012 Posted in 2012, Comics/Images, MR, NL, Sci fi, Silly, Toronto .

Valentine’s Day is upon us and I’m using today as an excuse to bring up a couple of things.

First off, I have to show you what is probably the most geek-tastic and epic gift that Matt has given me for Valentine’s to date…

Left foot, right foot

Posted on February 12, 2012 Posted in 2012, GSE 2012, NL, St. John's, Taiwan .

As I get ready for the GSE to Taiwan, I’m thinking about packing light. I’ll be away for almost six weeks (four weeks in Taiwan and 11 days in Japan) and will have professional, casual and vacation clothes as well as other things.

While in Taiwan, I’m staying with Rotarian host families and won’t want to have a bunch of stuff to cart around from home to home. I’ll have my camera gear, my iPad2 and a suitcase of clothes and necessities.

I’ve been reading about techniques for dealing with jet-lag and one suggestion is to try and incorporate 30 minutes rigorous exercise during your regular REM period for three consecutive days after you arrive. I’ll need to calculate my REM period and then do the timezone math, but it’s something I’d like to try and do even for the first day or two after we arrive. I’m a runner and it’s one of the easiest ways of exercising. Slipping on a pair of sneakers, turning on some music with a heavy beat is the perfect thing for me. But my running shoes aren’t small (besides the fact that I have BIG feet, they’re not compact footwear) and I don’t see myself wearing them a lot when I have a pair of casual sneakers I’d rather wear.

I’m guilty of bringing way too much clothes and footwear when I travel, so I’m struggling with what I should and shouldn’t bring. And with the whole idea of exercising, at this point it’s exactly that: an idea. It may not even be possible to work into my schedule. The idea of bringing a large pair of footwear I may not even put on has me looking for other options.

Potential solution: my Vibram FiveFingers or as I like to call them – my toe shoes!

Vibram shoes

Don't they just look like they're full of crazy?!
