A lot has happened over the past 12-14 months for Matt  and I. We considered including a little newsletter/update in our holiday cards this year, but didn’t really have time to make that happen. As a compromise, we wanted to do a quick video update that could be shared with friends and family (especially those who live in different parts of the country and beyond). But again, there’s been a lack of time to make such an endeavour happen.

Instead, I’m here to encourage everyone not feel pressured into setting goals that are driven by guilt trips. It drives me nuts that the bulk of advertising right now focuses around weight loss, kicking bad habits like smoking, and dating (did you know that eHarmony is free this weekend? After the 50th time I saw their ad, I think I got the memo…).

The subject line of this post comes from a series of skits on CBC’s This Hour Has 22 Minutes. It involves a mother (actress Mary Walsh) and son (actor Greg Thomey) who provide commentary on the latest political and pop culture topics; all while watching TV. The mother, donning her fuzzy slippers is often seen kicking the son while lying on the couch.  She’s not happy about the current program they’re watching and therefore wants to change the channel. To which she demands (while kicking), “Gimme me dat clicker!” I can’t find a clip online, but if anyone else can, please leave a comment!

I’m here, and here, and here and…
There are so many social media channels, tools and places nowadays. It’s hard to keep track. Heck, I want to make this contact page more snazzy and whenever I go to edit I think, “Oh I should had my account on such-and-such account here.”

Flip, Flip, Hooray!

Posted by Virginia under Uncategorized

When you hear the term “flipper dinner” what do you envision?

Perhaps you instantly think of a meal that is serenaded by that punk band “that formed in San Francisco, California in 1979, continuing in often erratic fashion until the mid-1990s, then reuniting in 2005.” (*cough* thank you Wikipedia *cough*)

Or you’re now elated because you envision a water-bound dinner that has that cute and lovable dolphin we all watched on TV attending a pool party.

And some of you may think I’m about to provide a lecture on the importance of consistent post-dinner oral hygiene as you are a loyal user of the Flipper toothbrush holder. (OK I’ll admit, the toothbrush holder was the only other thing on the 1st page of my “flipper” Google search besides the dolphin and that punk band…)

Well guess what – in Newfoundland and Labrador, the term “flipper dinner” involved the consumption of seal flippers.

Yes, yes I know – “oh it’s wrong… how can you do that… but the baby seals are so cute!” I’m not here to debate the moral issues some may have about this type of meal, instead I want to tell you about how yummy and tasty such a meal can be if you keep an open mind!

Last week Matt and I went to Flipper Dinner that was organized by my Dad’s Shriners group (you know, those guys that wear the red fez hats? My dad is one of them!). Neither Matt nor I have had flipper before and while my grandfather is a huge fan, my brother (who historically growing up was a picky eater) is a BIG fan of flipper. Even though my brother is currently living near the Boston area these days, just knowing he’s enjoyed flipper was a big selling point in my eyes (he is my big brother after all).

So my husband (who’s originally from Ontario) and I went with my grandparents and experienced seal flipper for the first time. Someone mentioned to Matt had flipper can be rather fishy tasting… I’ve heard it can be really oily… But we both agreed it was neither that evening. In fact, the most smell we could get from it was a faint liver-like aroma. Clearly the Shriners did something right.

Flipper is basically a dark meat and (in my opinion) tastes a lot like Turr (a small seabird more well known as a Common Murre). Now I’ll admit it was a rather rich meal and I certainly wouldn’t want to eat it every week, but overall I have no complaints about the experience and I’m really glad we went. In fact, if they do it again next year (and it’s a traditional fundraiser for a lot of churches and community groups in St. John’s), I’ll definitely want to attend this same one because they knew what they were doing.

I’ve asked around and there seems to be a trend that you either love flipper or hate it. And there’s a distinct separation amongst the flipper lovers on whether or not they’ll eat straight up flipper or if it has to be in the form of flipper pie (which sounds very nom nom nom to me!).

Either way, it was a lovely evening had by all. The fundraiser was a big hit and is now tucked away as a fun family memory. Here’s my dad as one of the excellent servers during the evening’s festivities.

Thanks for reading and I hope you won’t judge me too harshly on this recent meal decision.

To read about Matt’s experience with Flipper Dinner, check out his recent blog entry about it.

Have you ever had flipper? If not, would you if given the opportunity? If not, is there anything exotic or unique out there that you haven’t tried yet that has left a curiosity lingering in the back of your mind?

In case you didn’t see my post on Friday about communications skills, there was another gem from Dilbert posted on Saturday.

Communications is so subjective and it’s hard not to offend someone if you think they’re being an idiot. It’s important to be careful about what words you use… if you start throwing around five-syllable words, people may start using a universal translator (AKA a dictionary) up as a means of translating you. Try to minimize the jargon and stick with three to four syllables max. Otherwise, someone may realizing you’re mocking them.

My to-blog list includes the recent social media comics they had two weeks ago (as mentioned in my earlier post). Definitely commenting on them soon… perhaps later this week.

Landlocked No More

With a recent absence of posts, I have a very good reason why… Matt and I have moved to St. John’s, Newfoundland & Labrador!

It’s been an insane couple of months, but here’s a quick overview:

  • Sadly, I was laid off in mid-July due to an organizational restructure caused by financial changes at Kids Help Phone. No hard feelings. I’m still very much in touch with previous coworkers (they’re like a second family to me) and I continue to support the organization and the important work they’re doing for kids in Canada;
  • After said layoff, I hopped on a plane and went home to St. John’s visiting family and friends and ramping up my local job hunt and expanding my network;
  • The second weekend in August was filled with bachelor and bachelorette fun as friends for close friends getting married the following week (we were in Oro and/or Collingwood for pretty much the whole weekend);
  • Shortly after, Matt received a job offer from an employer in St. John’s. The offer requested he start employment in St. John’s on September 7th… and so the crazy #mmvmNLmove began!
  • The previously mentioned wedding was on August 14th and WOW was it fun! Two great friends are now hitched and spending their lives together;
  • In mid August, I received a job offer from Memorial University (yay!);
  • Our only free weekend in August had us hosting a “Mr & Mrs Middleton are moving, so come drink our booze and take our stuff” party. Seriously, that’s what we called it. AMAZING weekend was had by all;
  • During the last weekend in August, my sister-in-law (Matt’s sister) was married in Barrie (another weekend out of town and just three days before the movers were arriving);
  • The first week of September had movers arrive on August 30th (after an all-nighter of packing), Matt and I staying in a hotel for a couple of nights in Toronto (thanks to Hotwire.com), going up to Barrie on September 2nd for my mother-in-law’s birthday, and then flying out of the Greater Toronto Airport (YYZ) the morning of September 3rd.

So needless to say the past month+ has been a blur. I’ll try to write more about some of the above mentioned events, but it could take a while.

Being back in St. John’s has been amazing. We’re finding a good rhythm here and are settling in nicely. We even bought a new car! More details on that later…

Bell Island, Newfoundland & Labrador (2007)

So that’s it for now. Still alive and doing very, very well. :) And just to tease you a little, enjoy this photo taken from my uncle’s yacht back in July 2007. It was a beautiful day and we sailed around parts of Bell Island, NL.
