Mommy Musing Monday – Sleep When She Sleeps They Said

Posted on July 8, 2013 Posted in 2013, Baby, Miranda, Musing Monday, Parenting .

Before Missy Moo arrived, I was given lots of advice (and continue to receive advice both solicited and often not).

One bit of wisdom I often heard was sleep when the baby sleeps.

Once she arrived, so many people encouraged me to sleep when she did… but it’s not always that easy!

For the first couple of months, I had to accept the fact that I often didn’t have time to make dinner (or even lunch some days! And I often forgot to eat) and that dishes could be done the next day. But once I managed to get into the swing of things and Missy Moo started sleeping through the night, I figured I could get myself in order and manage to check off various to-dos during the day.

Yeah, that works if your baby actually sleeps during the day…

The thing is, she’ll sometimes nap during the day, but it’s often a 30 minute power nap. There are some days where a nap may be a couple of hours, but it’s impossible to predict when those golden moments will occur.

We’ve quickly realized that our adorable little miss is very nosy and doesn’t want to miss a thing. She fights sleep tooth and nail. I’ve accepted the fact that you sometimes just have to let her cry it out as they say. It’s hard letting her yell and cry out when you can tell she’s so mad (see my earlier post about baby swearing). But if you wait just a few more minutes, she’ll probably find her thumb or a finger and suddenly drift off to sleep. She can go from completely awake to a solid sleep in the blink of an eye. I wish I could do that!

Sleeping playmat

I was putting some laundry on the drying rack in the other room when suddenly little miss stopped bawling out and making noise while on her playmat, I came to check on her and found her fast asleep! Too cute!

If I have the car for the day, she’ll often get in a few good naps because she enjoys the car and also can sleep while being pushed around a grocery store or some other retail establishment. I swear she’s been asleep more often than not whenever I take her to Costco.

Then there are the moments where she fights sleep so hard and I know that letting her cry it out isn’t going to work. If it’s a nice day, I’ll put her in the car seat and attach it to the stroller and take her for a walk. It’s a win-win since she gets fresh air along with some sleep, and I get in some exercise.

Some days I manage to get a lot done. Other days – not so much. Either way, you just have to roll with it.

Mommy Musing Monday – I’m Awake I Swear

Posted on July 1, 2013 Posted in 2013, Baby, Miranda, Musing Monday, Parenting .

I find it hilarious that my daughter is sometime as stubborn as I am about sleep.

While I love a good night’s sleep, it’s often hard to get me to actually go to bed. This is something my parents can no doubt confirm.

Totally awake

I’m not asleep, I’m just resting my eyes…

So when Missy Moo is in need of a nap during the day, she’ll often fight it. And boy does she ever fight it! I won’t share the video from our monitor where she’s hardcore baby swearing at me, while kicking her lets and having a bit of a meltdown.  Of course I’m bad and just laugh when she does it because I can only imagine what she’ll say someday when she’s that upset and has words at her disposal.

So the other day she was in her exersaucer and before I saw the signs of her getting tired, she was starting to bob her head and drift off. And what did I do? Did I pick her up and put her to bed? Nope. I instead got out my phone and recorded her. Ha ha, cause that’s how we roll in this house.

Never fear, after this video was taken, she was promptly put in her crib. Where she was almost completely awake as soon as we laid her down, but she did drift off again.

My friend Martha has suggested that we use a hot water bottle or Magic Bag to warm up the spot in her crib where she’ll lie down for a nap. It’s often that drop in body temperature that will wake babies back up when they’re moved from a person’s arms and put into a cool crib.

Mommy Musing Monday – Nom Nom Food!

Posted on June 24, 2013 Posted in 2013, Baby, Food, Miranda, Musing Monday, Parenting .

It’s interesting to hear everyone give their opinion so quickly when it comes to discussing someone else’s baby.
Don’t give a baby cereal before they’re six months!

You shouldn’t put rice cereal in their bottle… they might choke!

Breast is best (so in other words, starve your child you horrible mother you!… just kidding. I’m not that bitter!)

But shouldn’t we remind ourselves that every baby is different? Maybe infant led weaning is best for your child. Or maybe they want to start using a spoon right away. Or the just grab onto it like Missy Moo will do if I try and let her play with some cereal sans bottle. Or maybe your baby has other plans and just hasn’t given you the official memo yet.

Missy Moo has already made it clear what sort of food she wants to eat…

Nom nom ribs

Ribs are yummy!

Don’t worry, we haven’t really feed her ribs… yet. But it’s only a matter of time. I mean really, the poor thing doesn’t have any teeth so the best she can do is hope to gum them a bit. It really wouldn’t be fair to expect her to make a good meal out of ribs just yet. But she definitely enjoyed licking the bone, so that’s a good sign. Ha!

There’s also the running joke with family and friends who try to get a reaction out of Matt and I when they attempt to feed our little one food (cake, fries, etc.) or drink (beer, wine, etc.) before her time. But we just laugh and say, “No, not yet!”

You really can’t take yourself too seriously when you have a baby. They tend to throw it back into your face. And sometimes they literally throw it up back at you. Yes, after answering the door and greeting the UPS guy in my PJs with my hair in fits, I’m quickly abandoning any shame I may have had left.

But back to feeding a baby…
In the end, you – the mom, the father, the guardian, or whoever you are – knows what’s best for the little one.

And even if you have no clue as to what you’re doing, that’s OK! Cause the rest of us new moms have no idea what we’re doing either! We’re just winging it (Mmmmm, wings…) and hoping for the best!

P.S. Happy four months to our little miss! I can’t believe how quickly the time is fly past us!

Mommy Musing Monday – See You Spoon

Posted on June 17, 2013 Posted in Baby, Food, Miranda, Musing Monday, Parenting .

About a month ago, I saw our family doctor and talked to him about the fact that Missy Moo was eating a lot (as in wanting a 5 oz bottle every two hours some days), yet was sleeping through the night (around 6-9 hours). I was in NO WAY complaining, but wanted to ask him if we should possibly try giving her some cereal to help her increased daytime appetite.

He recommended that we start putting some rice cereal in her bottles twice a day. We currently give her  a teaspoon of cereal with some extra water in her bottle twice a day.

Happy Captain Picard Day!

Posted on June 16, 2013 Posted in 2013, Family, Holidays, Miranda, Parenting, Sci fi, Silly .

It seems more than fitting that Matt’s first Father’s Day also falls on Captain Picard Day.

Anyone who knows my husband is aware of his encyclopedic memory when it comes to all things Star Trek (and that’s including all of the various series within the franchise). He can watch the opening scene for any episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation and within seconds, can tell you in detail what the episode is about (and often knows the actual title of the episode!).

Oh ya know, just hanging out with my new Captain Picard doll. #StarTrek

Happy Captain Picard Day!*

Now he’s not alone in his love of Star Trek. I too am a huge fan. In fact, we’ve had more than one heated debate about all sorts of obscure topics from Worf’s Klingon baggage, Riker’s beard, Geordi’s failed love life, to potential courses Captain Picard would teach at Starfleet Academy.

Yes… we’re nerdy and proud.

So today we will be drinking – Tea. Earl Grey. Hot. And no doubt discussing the many great traits of what we both consider to be the best Starfleet captain.

UPDATE: Here’s the card and book that Missy Moo gave her daddy for Captain Picard day.

*If you’re curious about the knitted Captain Picard doll that Missy Moo is holding, it was made by my very talented co-worker Moya. She made this for our daughter and didn’t even use a pattern!

I want to read about…

Been there, done that
