{"id":97,"date":"2009-12-01T13:25:49","date_gmt":"2009-12-01T18:25:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/virginiamiddleton.ca\/blog\/?p=97"},"modified":"2009-12-01T14:29:20","modified_gmt":"2009-12-01T19:29:20","slug":"ginger-n-spice-things-not-so-nice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/virginiamiddleton.ca\/blog\/2009\/12\/01\/ginger-n-spice-things-not-so-nice\/","title":{"rendered":"Ginger &#8216;n Spice &#8211; What&#8217;s Not so Nice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two weeks ago\u00a0(November 15 &#8211; 21, 2009) was <a title=\"National Bullying Awareness Week\" href=\"http:\/\/org.kidshelpphone.ca\/EN\/event\/?id=230\" target=\"_blank\">National Bullying Awareness Week<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"What is bullying?\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kidshelpphone.ca\/en\/informed\/bullying\/bullying.asp\" target=\"_blank\">Bullying <\/a>is a concern for kids, teens and even adults every single day. And while it&#8217;s important to talk about it during the other 51 weeks of the year, having a week dedicated to talking about this problem is something I strongly encourage.<\/p>\n<p>On a positive note, there were a lot of great news stories, blog entries and media coverage that talked about bullying and cyber-bullying. In fact, the <a title=\"The Star\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thestar.com\" target=\"_blank\">Toronto Star <\/a>and <a title=\"Parent Central\" href=\"http:\/\/www.parentcentral.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">ParentCentral.ca<\/a>\u00a0covered a <a title=\"How to handle a cyber-bully\" href=\"http:\/\/www.parentcentral.ca\/parent\/newsfeatures\/article\/727137--how-to-handle-a-cyber-bully\" target=\"_blank\">great story on cyber-bullying<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What really upsets, angers and saddens me is that during that same week of awareness, November 20 is unofficially known as <a title=\"Kick a Ginger Day\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ginger_Kids\" target=\"_blank\">National Kick a Ginger Day<\/a>. It stems from a South Park episode that was in 2005.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout North America, there are\u00a0 reports that students in uban, remote and rural communities participated in Kick a Ginger Day.\u00a0I heard about it last Monday and as someone who was bullied in junior high,\u00a0thought, &#8220;Enough is enough; I have something to say about this.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"425\" height=\"350\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/0twYHQ-G-7Q\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>So what are your thoughts on bullying and Kick a Ginger Day? Is it just a silly joke that we&#8217;re taking too seriously? Should we expel and publicly punish anyone promoting this targeting tactic? Is there somewhere we can meet in the middle?<\/p>\n<p>For me, bullying is wrong.
