I watched game seven and was proud when Canucks fans stood up and cheered enthusiastically for their team during the last minute of play when it was obvious the home team wasn’t going to win.

But shortly after that touching moment, news reports started coming out about violent acts, riots and looting occurring in downtown Vancouver. A few days later I heard inn an interview that someone admitted they were part of a group who brought a truck downtown with them with the intent to burn the vehicle if Vancouver lost. I couldn’t believe it.

There are lots of psychologist studies on mob mentality and how the combination of adrenaline, young men and alcohol can be a toxic mixture… but in my opinion there’s also one other explanation: pure stupidity and an absence of common sense.

I wasn’t proud to be Canadian on the morning of June 16 and after all the Stanley Cup hype of “cheering for Canada’s team” the response to the loss was a slap in the face.
