NOTE: I originally started this post back on March 22. Its about time I took it out of draft status.
If you haven’t read my original post about flipper dinner, you may want to check it out before reading the rest of this post…
On March 1, 2011 Matt and I once again went to a Flipper Dinner hosted by the Compass Shrine (who are part of the Mazol Shriners) where my dad is a member. Instead of having the event at the Mount Pearl Reid Theatre, we went to the Freemasons’ Hall in Mount Pearl.
It was my first time visiting this fairly new venue and I must say that it’s very nice! I think going forward, Compass Shrine should consider hosting flipper dinners here because the atmosphere was great and it brings a sense of “home” given the location and all.
I really enjoy the Compass Shrine’s flipper dinners because in addition to receiving a great meal and having a fun night, I’m surrounded by many people who have known me since was a child (heck, some have known me since I was born!). It’s like a family reunion where I get to see a lot of uncles and some aunts I haven’t seen in a very long time. That’s something I love about Newfoundland and Labrador — the sense of community to instantly feel when you enter a room and see people you know. Maybe I haven’t seen someone in quite a while, but that doesn’t matter. What matters is that we’re in the same room right now and we have a lot of catching up to do. It’s a very special connection, but something you can share with a lot of people.
The meal of course was fantastic. I ate more this time than my first experience with flipper last year in September. What I do find tough is that I fill up on the yummy dinner and then I’m teased with dessert! In the fall we had carrot cake and while that was good, apple pie with ice cream is just too good to pass up! I managed to get a few fork fulls down before waving the white flag (my napkin) and surrendering.
When my dad first mentioned that another dinner was coming up, I knew right away that I would want to go and that Matt would likely want to partake as well. Another big fan of flipper is my grandfather. As long as I can remember, I recall Poppy Sturge being one of the first people I knew who really liked flipper. Even before I knew what flipper was (and not the dolphin or the punk band), flipper was always associated with him. Now that I know how awesome it is (and Matt feels the same way), I have a feeling that this is the start of a great tradition for the three of us. Thank you Compass Shrine for hosting a tasty and fantastic fundraiser.
Do you have any annual events that have become traditions? Was it something planned where you said, “this will become a tradition for us!” Or was it through frequency that it naturally progressed into something you do regularly?
